Entry 8 (Season 1)

A Remedy and a Dinner Party

Oh, I have so much to share with you, dear reader, but where to begin? First I should say I have completed the Courage remedy for the Baron. As I was preparing for the Hume’s dinner party, right before I left the cottage, I drew out all my feelings: the nerves, the excitement, and, most importantly, the determination. It is with that final Impression I finished my task.

And all that courage was certainly not wasted as I did attend the Hume’s dinner party. It was ever so lovely. Besides myself, the Humes had invited their son and his wife, and the woman who keeps the tavern, and the postmaster and his daughter. They were already there by the time I arrived, and though they looked surprised upon seeing me, they all greeted me kindly. After a pleasant meal, we had jam tarts and played a round of charades, for which I was far too bashful to act anything out. But I did manage to correctly guess during one round. Mr. Hume gave us a riddle. And oh goodness, I even recited one of my stories. The tavern keeper said it was beautiful, and Mr. Hume teased me, remarking that if I was so good at baking and telling stories, he wondered what other talents I might be hiding. At this I couldn’t help but giggle. I was glad everyone seemed to enjoy the story, and despite my nerves I had a grand time.

The next day, I delivered the Courage remedy to the Baron without issue. Everything seemed to be fine, well that is until later, when I began to hear rumors in the village. It seemed the remedy was working too well, and now the Baron’s son was talking back and arguing with his father. Oh goodness, I thought I was done for. All of that hard work, only to be ruined by rousing too much courage. I dreaded going into town yesterday, and when I saw the Baron and his men riding towards me, I feared I would faint. Surely they would drag me away! But instead he threw another bag of coins at me, blustering on that while his blasted son wouldn’t shut his mouth, at least he had started to stand up for himself. He laughed loudly and told me if there was “anything” I needed, I shouldn’t hesitate to ask. They rode off, and I was so overwhelmed I almost cried, but Mrs. Hume patted me on the back and assured me that I’d done very well.

Oh goodness, after all that it seems everything has turned out for the best. I am glad, dear reader, I have been able to share it all with you. Your encouragement has meant so much these past few months, and I hope that in some small way I have been able to do the same for you. Fall is drawing to a close, and winter is close at hand. I look forward to sharing with you whatever the snowy season might have to offer.
